Topic: First GTA4 trailer finally out

We didn't report on this earlier in the month when Rockstar tossed up their countdown because there was nothing to report, just that the trailer was coming 1800 ET 29 MAR 2007. But that time has come, so here we are.

See the trailer here.

Local Mirror: Normal Resolution (~32mb) HD Trailer (~64mb)
(Shout outs to TeamXbox for being the first place I could find that could actually serve up files to me)

As for the details, well, we won't spoil it here. We'll discuss it in the comments for those interested.

Re: First GTA4 trailer finally out

Setting: Liberty City. Modern time?
Main Character: Some manner of Russian dude
Release Date: US - 17 OCT 2007, EU - 19 OCT 2007
Platforms: 360, PS3 (PC Later, as usual)

It looks pretty as hell. I was initially concerned about going back to Liberty City, but I expect we'll have everything available in GTA3/LCS as the first "city". Who knows where else we might get. Based on how far from LA the source-cities were in GTA:SA, we could end up seeing a cities based on Atlantic City, Boston, etc.

I'll have mirrors up for the HD and non-HD trailers from teamxbox in a few minutes.

Edit: Mirrors are up

No that's definately New York City (I just got back from there today, actually)
This game looks pretty darned hardware intensive. Something tells me this is going to be one of those "vista only" games as well, since it'll probably need directx 10

Re: First GTA4 trailer finally out

Umm. Liberty City is based on New York City, just as Vice City was inspired by Miami, and the three cities in San Andreas were based on Los Angelas, Los Vegas, and San Francisco. And Vista? Well I'm sure there will eventually be a PC version, but so far it's only been announced as being released on the Xbox 360 (yay!) and the Playstation 3 (boo!).

Not New York, eh? From what it looks like it's the exact same thing, only with different names.

I don't think you "get" GTA settings. This is exactly what they've been doing forever. If you take the areas in small chunks, like screenshots, or the kind of video you get in a teaser trailer, Liberty City looks just like NYC, Los Santos looks just like LA, Vice City looks just like Miami, Las Venturas looks lust like Vegas, and San Fierro looks just like San Francisco. That's the idea. Once taken as a whole, however, the maps aren't exact. The only one I know of that was a real city through and through was GTA2: London.

Re: First GTA4 trailer finally out

The only time I've been in LA was for e3, but driving through it I was amazed at how well parts of Los Santos visualy mached up perfectly to parts of LA.

Of course, they've had to smoosh everything together because their environments are so much smaller than real cities.  As their environments get bigger they can have room for more recognisable landmarks.

Did you eat at a Cluckin' Bell?

I spend all day in Virtual Reality.  I come out to play video games.
